RE: Switch it up,,,good exp. with Chinese Tires

Buy American. Save an Americans job!!!!!
There are NO American manufacturers of any major tire brand for ST rated tires. Makes too many sparks towing down the road with NO TIRES :)
On a more serious note I refuse to use tires made by folks who are trying to kill our pets or our children. I use Maxxis which are made in Thailand.
Actually, Maxxis is a Taiwanese company that makes really good tires.

Professor:
Thank you for the re-focus on factual information, rather than sweeping generalizations based upon folklore. I have no facts to offer, or generalizations to make, just appreciated the re-focus of the thread.

RE: Which Fifth Wheel to buy?

I would suggest you look at manufacturers who advertise fulltime. Peterson Industries (Excel), Double Tree, Carriage. Any and all have the potential for issues. I noted these three because I know they advertise fulltime units. That does not mean other manufacturers products won't hold up (Personally, I like the Montana).
Regarding financial condition. Good luck to all of us if the past two weeks on Wall Street continue to play out. Who knows who has the financial strength to continue, RV manufacturer or not.

RE: Whose insurance?

The auto policy covers the trailer while it is under tow. If you've already completed the sales transaction, the seller no longer has an insurable interest. He would be covered for any liability due to his negligence if an accident occurs while towing, but the trailer itself would not be covered under the seller's auto policy.
My advice, buy a policy for the trailer before it is moved. Once set-up on the site, you need a policy to cover yourself anyway.

RE: Trading down??

We finally came to a similar conclusion on "less trips". About 90% of our camping is done at the same place, about 75 miles away. The park has on-site storage, so we decided to store it there. While the monthly storage cost is higher, we'll save enough in diesel fuel to more than pay for it. Plus we are using it more often. It's nice to jump in the car and drive to the lake and the trailer is already set-up waiting for use.

RE: I Need New Tires...I Need advice from the pros

Where did some of you get your Maxxis tires? Did you
order directly from them and have someone else install?
rjsd1. Got my Maxxis at Discount Tire in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area.
The nearest Discount Tire to me is about 80 miles away.
Ah, call them and buy 'em and have them dropped shipped to your local tire shop for mounting?

RE: I Need New Tires...I Need advice from the pros

First, I agree with moving to 16" rims and LT tires if you can. However, I did not have the money to get new tires, plus buy new wheels. I got 10-ply, E rated Maxxis tires. Those tires get good reviews on this site, so that is how I landed there. Denmans also get good reviews.

RE: Adding an Axullary Transmission Cooler

As long as you are within specs on the CCC and GCVW, the stock transmission cooler is more than adequate. Save the money for diesel fuel, or an adult beverage or two.

Here is another vote for Craigslist. I have not sold a 5th wheel, but did sell a motorcyle within 5 days for the asking price.

RE: Shock upgrade, will they help the ride that much?

I very recently put four Bilsteins on my truck. I have not pulled the trailer yet, but I can tell a difference in the ride. Don't get me wrong, it's still a truck, but overall ride has improved. More importantly, the DW noticed and said the ride was better.

RE: Dumbest thing you've ever done while RVing with your Rig?

Got all backed in to a site (which I still find "challenging" on occasions). Looked at the site and all looked level. Now it was pretty hot and I really had an adult beverage on my mind, so I pulled the release lever on the hitch. You guessed it, these old eyes apparently can't compute level anymore. The 5er rolls backwards. Luckily for me I was in such a hurry for my libation, the tailgate was still up. The kingpin made a nice dent in the top of the tailgate, cutting my new Rhino liner. The plus side of the tailgate being up was it stopped the trailer from rolling any further. Had it not been up I'd still be chasing it down that hill behind the site.
Had the Rhino lining repaired, but left the dent in the tailgate as a reminder. Rushing thru any of the hitch/unhitch process is just not real bright. Lesson learned - chocks on the tires first thing now.

RE: Diesel fuel stops

DW and I use the team approach at the truck lanes as previously mentioned. Using the high volume pump on my 34 gallon tank does not take long enough to hold anybody up for any length of time. It is easier and therefore safer for me. Just pull up out of the way when you are done.
